Summary Death toll from a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, which struck the country's second-biggest city Christchurch of New Zealand reached 98, while more than 226 people are still missing.

Rescue operations continued at various locations within the city, but authorities warned earlier that hopes of survivors were fading. Efforts of rescuers were hindered by the prospect of new collapses of damaged buildings, with most fears focused on a teetering 26-storey hotel tower. At the Christchurch International airport, hundreds of travellers, including tourist and residents of the city, are waiting in line hoping to catch a flight out.
