Summary United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the international body is closely following the situation in Libya. Libya is in uproar after a revolt started about a week ago against the rule of Muammar Gaddafi.
Ban Ki-moon told that the reported nature and scale of the attacks on civilians are egregious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. I condemn them, loudly and without qualification. Those responsible must be held accountable in courts of law.He maintained that the violence must stop and attacks against civilians are a serious violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. Those responsible for brutally shedding the blood of innocents must be punished, the UN chief reiterated. Earlier the UN Security Council condemned the use of violence and called for those responsible for attacks on civilians to be held to account.Answering a question, Ban Ki-moon said that in order to stop killings in Libya, I could only continue to urge, in the strongest possible terms, first to stop violence, to protect human rights and the civilian population.
