Munter meets Gen Kayani: US reportedly refreshing NWA op call

Summary US has once again pressed Pakistan to launch operation in North Wazirirstan, reports a news agency.

The demand to carry out an operation against militants in North Waziristan was renewed by US Ambassador Cameron Munter when he called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, according to the report.Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Athar Abbas confirmed that the ambassador held a meeting with the COAS on Wednesday. Saying he was not privy to the meeting, he declined to give any details of what they discussed.To a question, the army’s top spokesman said the ambassador had requested to meet the COAS.According to other reports, the Army chief denied US demand for open an American consulate in Balochistan. However, well-placed sources told the news agency that this issue was not discussed during the meeting as it was not in purview of the Army.When contacted, US Embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said that it was a private meeting and “we normally do not share private meetings’ details with the media”.According to independent sources, Gen Kayani and Ambassador Munter exchanged ideas on bilateral ties. They also discussed law and order situation in Afghanistan and matters regarding Pak-Afghan border. Pak-American strategic ties and visas issues were also discussed, sources added.
