Summary The federal government has agreed to give Rs 15 billion annual financial package for PIA.
This has been said by PIA MD Nadeem Khan Yousafzai, who further revealed that PIA fares would be subject to revision every month in line with oil prices.The MD said that tender would be announced this month for to charter 12 planes on lease as replacements for grounded planes. Furthermore, one plane would be added to the fleet every month March 2012 onwards as a way to alleviate the financial burden on the national airline which is under Rs 130 billion debt.He claimed that 90 per cent of the flights are on time now as the matter has been taken notice of. He said the fares of the PIA would be subject to change in prices of oil in the international market.Yousafzai said that he has pledged to restore the national airline with the slogan of ‘Shahana Pakistan’. However, if one takes a closer look, the demand by the MD to provide Rs 30 billion annual package is no different from the one made by Railways Minister Bilour, who calls for 400 new engines before he could be held accountable.
