Many people are still believed to be trapped inside. The reason for the collapse was not immediately known.Fire brigades and ambulances rushed to the spot in Chandni Chowk, a Mughal-era walled city, while rescue operations continued.Eyewitnesses said apart from the residents of the building, a number of pedestrians and roadside vendors were also trapped in the rubble. The injured have been rushed to the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narayan Hospital in Indias national capital. This building collapse is a stark reminder of last Novembers building collapse in east Delhis Laxmi Nagar, in which at least 55 people were killed and 75 injured after a multi-storey building collapsed. Many Indian buildings do not conform to safety regulations, with owners building extra floors or structures without approval.
