Summary Taiwan launches the first undersea cable for earthquake and tsunami detection.

Director of central weather bureaus seismology center, Kuo Kai-Wen, said, This undersea cable is stretched towards the southeast, and a node will be placed at where Hoping Basin connects to the Ryukyu Island Arc. This is the turning point where the sea depth changes from 4,000 meters to 300 meters, which is the best point of observing tsunamis. He said, The Lanyang Plain is next to the Ryukyu Island Arc where the water becomes shallow, and Keelung has a harbour-like land formation. A tsunami was recorded in Keelung in 1867, so those places are identified as the ones most likely to be hit with a tsunami.
