Protest for improved public services in South Africa turns violent
Updated on

Summary South African police fired rubber bullets at protesters in Ermelo township on Tuesday as angry residents burnt tyres and lobbed petrol bombs at officers.

The residents said they are angry about the poor delivery of basic services like sanitation, housing, health care and road maintenance. The African National Congress (ANC) has issued a statement saying the ruling party condemns the violent protests that are currently taking place in Ermelo. The statement read: Whilst the leadership of the ANC acknowledges the challenges and the right of citizens to voice their concerns, there is no justifications whatsoever for the communities to destroy government and private property. Blocking of roads and destruction of public property which costs taxpayers millions, such acts cannot be condoned.
