Mascot for the 2012 London Olympics, a one-eyed cartoon image, has been named Wenlock after a small town in west England.Wenlock, its full name being Much Wenlock, began to hold sports games under the sponsorship of William Penny Brookes 46 years earlier than the first modern Olympiad. It was those sports games that inspired Barring de Coubertin, who started the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.The first founder of sports games in this small town was doctor William Penny Brookes who was born in Wenlock and stayed there all his life after studying medicine in London. He set up the Wenlock Olympiad society to encourage the local people to revive the Olympic spirit of the ancient Greece.At the countdown of 2012 London Olympic Games, Wenlock and Shrewbury held traditional games to continue the 100-year-old traditions. All the participants donned dresses of the Victoria times. Many people participated in the games that offered such events as competitive sports and rusty games. On two carriages, two people acted as Queen Victoria and Brookes, the founder of England Olympics, to express their respect for the two great figures.
