Summary Embezzlement of hundreds of millions of rupees was detected in repairing of railway locomotives.
According to sources, a plan to repair 36 out of work locomotives was initiated in 2007 with a cost of 1.6 billion rupees.The said locomotives were repaired in two years time and were made operational with a guarantee that the engines will work smoothly for four to five years.However, 13 of the repaired locomotives went out of order within few weeks and the remaining engines also developed faults.An inquiry revealed corruption of hundreds of millions of rupees and use of inferior material in repair work was also detected. The Railway Ministry has handed over the case to NAB for further investigation.
