A cable sent to Washington by the US ambassador in New Delhi on May 3, 2007 revealed that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, during his visit to New Delhi in 2007, offered his services as a mediator between the US and the Taliban.Fazl attended various ceremonies along with Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind leader Mahmood Madani during his India visit. Madani told a US official that Fazl had a pressing issue that he wanted to discuss with US officials, but he was only interested in holding these talks outside of Pakistan.According to the cable, Rahman was interested in acting as a go between for the United States, to negotiate with the Taliban in order to bring them into the mainstream and peacefully into politics in Afghanistan. Fazl had meetings with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ruling party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the national security adviser of India and they all supported his offer of mediating a deal with Taliban.
