ISLAMABAD (AP / Web Desk) — The Foreign Office spokespeson on Wednesday said this week s landmark peace talks between representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban were a "breakthrough" and that the two sides will meet again at a mutually agreed place after the Islamic fasting month of Ramazan.
Ministry spokesman Qazi Khalilullah didn t say whether the next round of talks will be held in Pakistan or elsewhere. He said Thursday that the atmosphere of the talks was "cordial" and that there would be a "further development."
The spokesperson said the two sides have expressed interest of building peace in Afghanistan. He said important countries are supporting this peace process, which is in everybody’s interest especially for the peoples of the region.
He said Pakistan is committed to supporting an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.
The two sides held their first official face-to-face discussions on Tuesday in a resort town near Islamabad. The talks came after several informal contacts between the Taliban and Kabul, most recently in Qatar and Norway.
To a question about the arrest of Zaid Hamid in Saudi Arabia, Qazi Khalilullah said our embassy has requested the Saudi authorities for consular access to the arrested analyst and provide information about the charges levelled against him and confirm the reports of his sentence.
