Summary A large number of students, teachers and members of civil society participated in funeral

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Karachi University’s (KU) slain Assistant Professor Waheed-ur-Rehman was laid to rest on Wednesday at a local cemetery and a case has been registered under anti-terrorism clauses at Yousaf Plaza police station.

According to details, the funeral prayer of the slain professor took palce at Federal B Area Block 16’s Ghufran Mosque. A large number of students, teachers, media personnel and members of the civil society showed up and participated in the funeral.

The slain professor was laid to rest at Yasinabad cemetery. Meanwhile, a murder case and subsequent investigation has been launched.

According to the police, the official complainant for the case is slain professor’s brother in law Pervaiz. The case has been registered against unidentified persons.

The case includes murder and anti-terrorism clauses.


Preliminary Investigation


The police have prepared preliminary investigation report according to which Waheed-ur-Rehman was attacked by at least six attackers on two motorbikes.

They had their faces covered with cloths and opened fire from both sides of slain professor’s vehicle.

The report says at least ten bullets were fired from 9MM pistols, of which, 9 shells were recovered from within car and one from professor’s cloths.

All bullet shells have been sent for forensic analysis.

 


PM condemns KU professor’s murder, orders inquiry


Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday strongly condemned the murder of Karachi University’s (KU) Assistant Professor Waheed-ur-Rehman and have ordered immediate arrest of the culprits after an inquiry.

According to details, PM Nawaz has summoned a report from Sindh government over the murder. He expressed condolences with the bereaved family of the slain professor.

Sharif said the government is making serious efforts to eliminate terrorism in Karachi.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the murder and demanded the government to bring culprits to justice.


Assistant Professor gunned down


An assistant professor of the University of Karachi was shot dead in Federal B. area on Wednesday, Dunya News reported.

Dr Syed Waheed-ur-Rahman was killed when unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on his car. The suspects managed to flee the scene soon after the attack.

The victim was an instructor at the Mass Communication department.

In protest against the incident, university students blocked main road and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. Educational activities at the university were also suspended.
