ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The federal government on Wednesday sought 48 hours from the Supreme Court for legislation to hold the local government elections in Cantonment areas, Dunya News reported.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja heard a contempt of court petition against the prime minister regarding LG polls in Cantonment areas.
Attorney General Salman Aslam told court that the prime minister is fulfilling his all the responsibilities. He assured that legislation process for LG polls in Cantonment areas will be completed within 48 hours.
The bench remarked that the court will not remain silent now as it is matter of public interest.
Additional Secretary Election Commission Syed Sher Afgan told court that elections could be held if amended Cantonment Board Ordinance is issued but the commission cannot hold elections under Board Act, 1924.
