Summary The postponed drives in three districts have not yet been commenced due to security concerns.

QUETTA (Dunya News) - Second phase of anti-polio campaign is underway in Quetta which will last till January 26, Dunya News reported Saturday.

According to sources, 950 teams have been arranged to inoculate polio drops to at least 417,000 children under five-year whereas the postponed anti-polio drives in Qila Saifullah, Zhob, Sherani and Loralai have not yet been commenced due to the security concerns.

Moreover, the security measurements have been beefed up by deploying police and Frontier Corps (FC) for the protection of polio workers.

Earlier, the first phase of polio campaign was from January 19 to January 22 however, the objective of the second phase is to vaccinate the remaining children.

Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic. Attempts to stamp it out have been badly hit by opposition from militants and attacks on immunisation teams that have claimed 68 lives since December 2012.

The militants claim that polio vaccination is a front for espionage or a conspiracy to sterilise Muslims.
