LG polls: Voting ends in Balochistan, counting underway

Summary Polling for the LG elections for over 4,000 seats in 32 districts of Balochistan has ended.

QUETTA (Dunya News) – Polling for local government elections in Balochistan started at 8:00am and continued till 5:00pm, while counting of votes is underway.

More than 17,000 candidates are contesting for 4,168 seats. Meanwhile, 2,507 candidates were declared unopposed whereas no candidate submitted nomination papers on 513 local bodies’ seats in the province.

About 5,715 polling stations and 11,847 polling booths were established across the province.

On the occasion, 5,718 presiding officers, 15,054 assistant presiding officers and 12,376 polling officers performed their duties.

Meanwhile, 55,000 security personnel were deployed across the province to ensure law and order during the elections.

Earlier, acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan Justice Nasirul Mulk said that voting in Balochistan was in progress in a peaceful way.

The acting Election Commissioner said he would visit all polling stations of Quetta, adding that any issues during the polling will be immediately resolved.

On the other hand, Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik said that except a few incidents‚ the election process remained peaceful.

The CM said credit of conducting local government elections in a peaceful manner goes to the people of Balochistan.

“We have implemented the Supreme Court’s orders by holding local bodies elections. In this way‚ we have proved that the people of Balochistan are true democrats and believe in democracy.” he added.
