Summary SC says LB polls in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan must be held on the announced dates.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered holding of Local Governments and Cantonment Boards elections on scheduled dates.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Tuesday disposed of petitions seeking extension in the dates for holding LB and Cantonment Board elections.
In its verdict the Supreme Court ordered Sindh to conduct polls on November 27 and on December 07 in Punjab and Balochistan.
The court has also ordered that Cantonment Board elections be held at the same time. The apex court said that no bill or ordinance can be passed that is repugnant to the spirit of the constitution.
Holding of Local Bodies elections is mandatory according to Articles 17, 32 and 140 of the constitution, the court observed.
It said government was not holding LB elections on the pretext of amendment in Cantonment Board Act.
The Supreme Court ordered Secretary Defense Cantonment Board to submit report on LB elections before Nov 11.
It also directed the federal government and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa govt to submit their reports within seven days.
