UNITED NATIONS (Agencies) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said this in his address to United Nations General Assembly Disarmament Conference in New York.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says Pakistan reserves the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy and does not want an arms race in South Asia.
Addressing UN Disarmament Conference in New York Thursday‚ he said Pakistan believes in minimum deterrence without entering into any arms race.
He said the international community should do away with discriminatory nuclear policy as it has harmed the world peace.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan is fully committed to nuclear non-proliferation regime and is ready to play its role for consensus building over disarmament.
He also stressed the need to formulate a new international policy on disarmament and nuclear non proliferation.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US Secretary of State John Kerry also met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in New York.
US Secretary of State John Kerry‚ on behalf of President Barack Obama‚ extended an invitation to Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to visit Washington next month.
During a meeting with the Prime Minister in New York on Thursday‚ he said President Obama will receive him at the White House on the 23rd of next month. The Prime Minister accepted the invitation.
The two sides also reviewed bilateral relationship and agreed to intensify the engagements in coming weeks and months to further expand and deepen bilateral cooperation in all areas.
It was also agreed to convene meetings of the various Working Groups under the revived Strategic Dialogue mechanism.
The Prime Minister said increased trade between Pakistan and the United States would contribute to the economic prosperity of the people of Pakistan and help in evolving a mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
Matters of mutual interest including regional stability and situation in Afghanistan were also discussed during the meeting.
Meanwhile, a meeting on "Education for All" was also held on Thursday. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Malala Yusufzai also attended the meeting.
The PM said that education is a high national priority. His government is committed to achieving all Millennium Development Goals including the goal of universal primary education.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would address to the General Assembly of the United Nation tomorrow. During his speech in the General Assembly, the PM would highlight the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in the war on terror.
The PM would also seek cooperation of international community especially the US and the European Union with Pakistan’s slogan of “trade not aid,”
On the other hand, the coming Sunday is important from Pakistan’s point of view when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would hold meeting with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.
This meeting of Pak-Indian premiers is being assumed as ice-breaking between both sides.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that Kashmir attack would not derail the peace dialogue.
