Security of sensitive polling stations is inadequate: EC

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim has raised concern over inadequate security measures for most sensitive polling stations and requested Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani to deploy army personnel.

 

In this regard‚ CEC has written a letter to Army Chief saying that despite limitations in terms of resources the presence of army personnel on highly sensitive polling stations is mandatory on Saturday. He said total number of highly sensitive polling stations is about fourteen thosuand.

 

Chief Election Commissioner asked General Kayani that army personnel should remain present at these most sensitive polling stations to ensure peaceful and transparent process of conduct of casting votes. CEC further said it is our collective duty to conduct peaceful elections.

 

Earlier it was decided that Army would be available as Rapid Development Units where there was need to cope with any situation at polling stations throughout the country.

 

According to sources, President Asif Ali Zardari had wrote a confidential letter to Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahim expressing his grave concern over security situation and persistent attacks of Taliban against 3 political parties.


It had been said in the letter written on April, 30 that PPP, MQM and ANP were being targeted in bloody Taliban attacks daily and if this situation was not addressed then it would ensue devastating consequences.


Presidency source said one copy of this letter had been sent to caretaker prime minister. The letter further stated that no step had been initiated by EC to improve security situation in the country.
