Summary Urges judiciary and media not to create confusion before the general elections.
LAHORE (Dunya News) - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said that democracy is the best system of government in the world and guarantee of progress of any nation.
Addressing a seminar on ‘Democracy’ here on Sunday‚ the Information Minister has said that states are run on principles and not by force.
The minister said it has been proved that Pakistan made progress and has been politically strengthened during the democratic governments.
Kaira said caretaker setup will be constituted within the provisions of the constitution. He said unfortunately instead of strengthening the democratic culture‚ the culture of changing loyalties is being promoted.
He said PPP has always respected judiciary despite the fact that every time PPP came into power‚ cases were registered against it even judicial murders of PPP leaders were committed and an elected Prime Minister was sent home.
He said that it is only democracy wherein politicians are accountable towards people. He said politicians are not only being criticized but they are being humiliated and ridiculed.
Kaira said that the real threat to democracy is nothing else but extremism‚ no matter it is 1979 or 2001 war was imposed in the name of extremism and terrorism. He said we need to cope with and change this mindset of extremism. He said we jointly have to cope with these problems.
He said radical changes take time; situation will not change in 4-5 years as it has not happened anywhere in the world.
Kaira said that PPP government restored constitution‚ handed over powers to parliament‚ empowered provinces and provided them additional resources of almost rupees 11 billion through NFC. However‚ we could not completely eradicate terrorism but have broken the backbone of terrorists network.
He said structural reforms necessary for democratic system to flourish have already been introduced‚ however‚ much needs to be done as democratic system not only has been made feeble but it was defaced to the core in the past.
He said media should play role to pave way for change as in democratic system true accountability takes place through vote.
Kaira said without an iota of doubt the elections will take place on time.
He said that Pakistan would not have broken up in 1971 if principles of democracy were properly followed.
Kaira said dictatorial rule is not based on principles and it drives its strength from authoritarian power while democracy has well-defined principles.
