ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack on polio field workers in Karachi and Peshawar in which women workers involved in polio eradication campaign lost their lives.
The President directed the Chief Secretaries of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces to conduct an enquiry into the incidents and submit the reports within forty-eight hours.
Paying tribute to the services rendered by the polio field teams‚ the president said that they have been instrumental in eradication of the disease from the country.
Meanwhile‚ the Sindh government has suspended polio vaccination campaign in the province following the killing of four female volunteers in various parts of Karachi on Tuesday.
Gunmen shot and killed four women vaccinators in three separate attacks in the southern port city of Karachi. A fifth volunteer, a 14-year-old girl, was shot and killed in the northwestern city of Peshawar. Another male volunteer was gunned down in Karachi last night, taking the total number of polio field workers killed since yesterday to six.
No group claimed responsibility for the attacks but the banned Pakistani Taliban have threatened polio vaccinators in the past.
