ISLAMABAD: Public Accounts Committee has taken notice of illegal appointment of two deputy chairmen in NADRA and directed they be removed within two days.

The committee met here on Thursday under its chairman Nadeem Afzal Chan in parliament house to review the matter of refusal from NADRA, National Press Trust, Pak-China Finance and Agri-business Support Fund in connection with the audit of their accounts by Auditor General (AG).

Interior ministry representatives told the committee that matter regarding appointment of two deputy chairmen in NADRA was subjudice, however these appointments were not approved by NADRA board in its meeting on October, 24.

Committee observed these appointments which have been made without board’s approval are illegal. Report in this respect must be presented before us within a week, committee directed.

Committee inquired from additional secretary interior why NADRA is not getting its accounts audited from AG. NADRA official said their organization had been given relaxation under law in this regard.

Nadeem Afzal Chan said no institution was exempted from audit as per constitution. Upon it NADRA agreed on undergoing audit exercise from AG.

Auditor General said his department was functioning under no act and PAC should extend help in this matter. Parliament should legislate on this count as AG office is working under one ordinance.

Linking AG office to finance ministry is tantamount to placing Supreme Court under the subordination of law ministry, he held.

AG office is being run as subordinate office of finance ministry. International monetary agencies don’t accept statistics of finance ministry therefore, our statistics are also not accepted by them, he added.
