Summary Ranatunga demanded an investigation into the country's 2011 World Cup final.
NEW DELHI (Dunya News) – India players Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra have rubbished the allegations levelled by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga regarding the match fixing in 2011 ICC World Cup final, and said the accusations are baseless.
Gambhir, who helped his team to lift the World Cup with a wonderful innings of 97 runs in the final, said Ranatunga should only make such remarks with proofs. Nehra, who was also a star performer for the men in blue during the tournament, counter-attacked on Arjuna and said what would be his feelings if he is asked that how did Sri Lanka become champions in 1996?
Another India cricketer Harbhajan Singh refused to give his remarks on the matter saying such allegations by Ranatunga have surfaced earlier as well.
It is pertinent here to mention that Arjuna Ranatunga on Friday demanded an investigation into the country’s 2011 World Cup final defeat by India amid allegations of match fixing.
Ranatunga, 53, in a video posted on his Facebook page, said he was shocked by Sri Lanka’s six-wicket defeat in the final at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
"I was also in India giving commentaries at the time. When we lost, I was distressed and I had a doubt," Ranatunga said. "We must investigate what happened to Sri Lanka at the 2011 World Cup final."
"I cannot reveal everything now, but one day I will. There must be an inquiry."
Without giving names, Ranatunga said players could not hide the "dirt" with their clean white cricket clothing.
