Summary Flood was not the only reason of shortage in cotton production in the country, operating sugar mills in the cotton zone due to political influence is also the main reason of the shortfall.
District Rahimyar Khan remained first in cotton production till 2008 and cotton production was more that 16 lakh bales in 2006 but due to sugar mills, cotton production area diminished and retultantly, the production also plunged. According to latest data, cotton production of Sanghar recorded at 15.69 lakh bales and the same for Rahimyar Khan declined to only 9.95 lakh bales. In spite of declaring Rahimyar Khan as a cotton zone, two new sugar mills were established in the area on political basis.
