LAHORE (Web Desk) – According to a report presented by the incumbent government in April 2016, almost one third of Pakistanis were living below the poverty line making the issue a huge challenge. Though efforts are being made in order to deal with the menace effectively, empowering the underprivileged class is one way of making a difference in the lives of the millions of people whose earnings are insufficient and who greatly rely on charity or donations to fulfill their everyday needs.

 Akhuwat  is a Pakistani Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which aims to eliminate poverty from the society by empowering the needy ones so that they may work their way towards living independent, self-sufficient and respectable lives. Akhuwat works upon the principle of ‘Qarz-e-Hasana’ and provides interest free microfinance services to deserving families whilst equipping them with useful skills and training them to boldly face the challenges of life.

Founded in 2001 in Lahore, the organisation envisions a society based upon the principles of compassion and equity. Akhuwat has been able to change the lives of thousands of families since its inception by proving to be a helping hand for them and currently operates in 251 cities around the country.

Focused upon providing loans based on Islamic principles, Akhuwat has been supporting individuals in becoming talented designers, cooks, chefs, mechanics, plumbers, engineers and freelancers as well. Those acquiring skills through the microfinance programme have been able to make a huge difference in the lives of their families and have served as an example for many to follow.

Akhuwat has initiated a number of projects through which thousands have benefitted. Akhwat Institute of Social Enterprise and Management (AISEM) is one of such projects introduced by the organisation with the aim to train individuals and make them skilled so that they may earn a respectable living on their own. Located in Lahore, AISEM targets equipping individuals with a range of micro entrepreneurship skills involving embroidery, artificial jewelry making, spare parts manufacturing, clothes stitching, leather products and others.

For the past ten years, Akhuwat Faisalabad Institute of Research, Science and Technology (AKHUWAT-FIRST) has been indulged in providing quality education in the field of science and technology along with promoting applied and basic research. Emphasis is particularly laid on the field of Biotechnology as the institution aims to develop the most talented biotechnologists in the country who shall play a vital role in the uplifting of the country.

Apart from all this, other areas focused by the organisation cater towards rehabilitation of the members of the transgender community, providing healthcare services to the needy ones, providing clothes to those who cannot afford them. A number of schools are being operated by the organisation in various districts of Punjab as well.

The organisation focuses upon instilling the spirit of volunteerism among the individuals of the society. Akhuwat is serving as the torchbearer of the real change needed in the society through the donations it receives.
