LAHORE/PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – At least 23 people have been killed and dozens injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the ongoing monsoon spell continued to wreak havoc, causing roof collapses, electrocution incidents and flash floods. Several houses were also damaged in the affected areas.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), nine people lost their lives in Punjab in incidents caused by heavy rainfall, including collapsing roofs and other weather-related accidents, while dozens of others sustained injuries.
In Raiwind's Kot Babu Khan area near Lahore, one person was killed and three others injured after the roof of a house collapsed. Four people were also injured when a roof caved in near Band Road in Gulshan Ravi, Lahore.
In Pakpattan's village 75-D, a woman died after the roof of a room collapsed, while a young man was electrocuted in Hota. In Gujrat, one person was killed and six others injured in separate roof collapse incidents, while three people were injured after a house roof collapsed in Sialkot.
Rescue officials said three people were killed and 14 injured in eight separate roof and wall collapse incidents in Gujranwala. In three separate electrocution incidents, one person lost his life while two others were injured.
In Sahiwal, a woman was killed and three people injured in roof collapse incidents. Eight people were injured in separate roof and wall collapse incidents in Mandi Bahauddin, while one person was injured after a shed collapsed in Bahawalnagar.
Heavy rain also inundated roads in Pindi Bhattian, disrupting traffic and creating difficulties for commuters. Faisalabad, Bhalwal and Jhang also received heavy rainfall, leaving several low-lying areas submerged.
The PDMA said the current spell of monsoon rains in Punjab is expected to continue until July 24.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported that 14 people were killed and 19 injured in various rain-related incidents across the province. The deceased included six men, six children and two women, while the injured comprised 11 men, four women and four children.
The report said 28 houses have been affected by heavy rains and flash floods, including six that were completely destroyed and 22 that sustained partial damage.
According to the PDMA, the incidents were reported in Peshawar, Nowshera, Khyber, Mardan, Buner, Bajaur, Shangla, Swabi, Lower Chitral, Lower and Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Torghar, Kurram and North Waziristan.
The PDMA spokesperson said relief operations are continuing in all affected areas with the assistance of Rescue 1122 and district administrations. Authorities added that water levels in rivers and streams across the province currently remain within normal limits, while intermittent rainfall is expected to continue until July 23.
