Summary Leaders exchange views on Gulf tensions and diplomatic engagement
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni at the Prime Minister's House in Islamabad, where both sides held talks on strengthening bilateral relations, reviewing the regional situation and promoting peace and stability across the region.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar, the Prime Minister's Adviser Dr Syed Tauqir Shah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and other senior government officials.
During the meeting, PM Shehbaz referred to his recent visit to Tehran, recalling his participation in the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. He also conveyed his best wishes to the Iranian leadership.
The prime minister expressed concern over the recent tensions in the Gulf, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilise the region. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomatic engagement to maintain regional peace and security.
Reaffirming Pakistan's foreign policy stance, Shehbaz said the country would continue to play the role of an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator wherever possible. He underscored Pakistan's commitment to supporting efforts aimed at preserving peace and stability across the region.
Eskandar Momeni thanked the Pakistani premier for the warm welcome extended to him and his delegation in Islamabad. He also conveyed goodwill and best wishes from the Iranian leadership.
Momeni said he had travelled to Pakistan with a high-level delegation of senior government officials to further strengthen cooperation and deepen relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The Iranian minister also appreciated the mediation efforts of PM Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, which he said resulted in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting reconciliation. The discussions also reflected the two countries' shared interest in expanding cooperation while supporting regional stability through continued diplomatic engagement.
