Summary A K-Electric emergency shutdown at Dhabeji pumping station disrupted Karachi’s water supply after 10 of 21 units were halted, causing widespread shortages across the city.

KARACHI (Dunya News) - A forced power shutdown by K-Electric at the Dhabeji pumping station has severely disrupted water supply across Karachi, leaving several areas facing shortages.

According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), K-Electric carried out an emergency shutdown at the Dhabeji grid’s power transformer number 1 at around 6:30 pm on 30 May to fix a critical technical fault.

As a result, 10 out of 21 pumping units at the Dhabeji pumping station were shut down, significantly affecting the city’s water distribution system. Several neighbourhoods are now experiencing partial to complete suspension of water supply.

The spokesperson said K-Electric had initially informed KWSC of only a one-hour shutdown for maintenance work. However, power has not yet been fully restored, and no clear timeline has been provided for resumption of electricity supply.

Officials warned that the prolonged outage has put additional pressure on the already strained water distribution network. Citizens have been urged to use water sparingly until normal supply is restored.

KWSC has said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with K-Electric for the earliest possible restoration of pumping operations.
