Summary Punjab Safe Cities Authority becomes Pakistan’s first certified public sector institution in AI management systems after securing international certification
LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has achieved a major international milestone in the field of artificial intelligence under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s “Digital Punjab” vision.
According to officials, the authority has become Pakistan’s first public sector organisation to receive certification for an Artificial Intelligence Management System.
Punjab Safe Cities Authority secured the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Artificial Intelligence Management System certification, placing it among a limited number of public sector institutions globally and across South Asia to achieve the distinction.
A spokesperson said the authority developed its complete artificial intelligence infrastructure in-house instead of relying on external companies. Twelve internally developed AI systems successfully met international AI lifecycle standards.
The authority has now been internationally recognised as a developer, integrator and effective operator of artificial intelligence systems linked to a network of more than 24,000 cameras across Punjab.
International experts from SGS conducted multiple audits of the Safe City headquarters, operational units and AI infrastructure before granting the certification.
During the audit process, experts declared the authority’s AI systems, governance framework and operational mechanisms compliant with global standards.
The internationally recognised systems include Smart Vision AI, facial recognition, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), intelligent traffic management, crime analytics and AI-based governance monitoring.
Punjab Safe Cities Authority also became the only public sector institution in Pakistan to hold both ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 international certifications.
Officials said Punjab Police was now among a select group of policing institutions worldwide to achieve such a milestone in AI governance, describing the achievement as a significant development for Pakistan and smart policing initiatives.
