ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir has reached Iran on an official visit, according to security sources.

The top military commander was received by Iran Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, who was acoompanied by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi who is already in Tehran for past few days.

During the visit, he will hold meetings with senior Iranian officials.

Sources said the discussions are likely to focus on US-Iran talks and other matters of mutual interest, the regional situation, and areas of bilateral cooperation. Further details regarding the meetings and the visit are expected to be released later.

The visit is being viewed as an important development in the context of diplomatic and security ties between Pakistan and Iran.

US Secretary of State Rubio sees progress in Iran talks, but says 'not there yet'

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington remains in “constant communication” with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, adding that “the highest levels of our government are constantly talking to him” and praising Pakistan’s role as “admirable” in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran. He described Pakistan as the primary interlocutor in the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had earlier visited Iran as part of Pakistan’s mediation push, engaging with Iranian leadership to advance discussions on ceasefire arrangements and broader negotiation frameworks between the United States and Iran. His visit formed part of a series of high-level engagements aimed at keeping diplomatic channels open amid escalating tensions.

Separately, Mohsin Naqvi has also made multiple visits to Tehran in recent days, holding repeated meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. These discussions have focused on reviewing proposals and relaying messages between the two sides as part of continued backchannel diplomacy.

The ongoing US-Iran conflict remains centred on issues including Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and regional security concerns, with Pakistan acting as a key intermediary in efforts to bridge differences. Amid fragile negotiations and shifting diplomatic signals, the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains a critical pressure point, with its control and access continuing to shape the trajectory of talks and global energy security.
