Interior Ministry tells Senate that 195,000 CNICs were blocked nationwide in three years, with KP and Sindh recording the highest numbers as inquiries continue.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Ministry of Interior has informed the Senate that a total of 195,000 computerized national identity cards (CNICs) have been blocked across Pakistan over the past three years.
According to the record presented, the highest number of blocked CNICs was reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa topped the list with 72,703 blocked identity cards, followed by Sindh with 49,666 cases.
Punjab recorded 29,852 blocked CNICs, while 34,990 identity cards were blocked in Balochistan.
In the federal capital Islamabad, 5,731 CNICs were blocked.
Meanwhile, 1,410 identity cards were blocked in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and 758 in Gilgit-Baltistan.
NADRA introduces major regulatory reforms in identification system
The Interior Ministry stated that 130,885 CNICs were blocked under Section 18, while action against 64,225 identity cards was taken on the basis of court orders.
During the same period, more than 46,000 blocked CNICs have been restored.
Officials added that over 148,000 CNICs remain blocked at present, with inquiries still underway.
NADRA maintains that these identity cards were blocked due to the provision of incorrect information and failure to pursue related legal cases.
