Arijit Singh announces retirement from playback singing after 15 years, confirms no new film songs while continuing independent music journey.
NEW DELHI (Web Desk) – Popular Bollywood singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, bringing an end to a chapter that defined Indian film music for over 15 years.
The singer shared the news through a detailed message on social media, surprising millions of fans who have followed his journey since his early rise in the 2000s.
In his New Year message, Arijit Singh confirmed that he will no longer record songs for films, stating that he has decided not to accept any new playback singing assignments. He described the decision as a personal milestone rather than a farewell, emphasising gratitude for the love he has received throughout his career.
“Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not going to take any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey,” the singer wrote.
Arijit Singh clarified that while he is stepping away from playback singing, he is not leaving music. He said he would continue creating music independently and work as a free artist, focusing on learning, experimenting, and producing music outside the film industry.
“I have not stopped making music. I am only separating myself from playback singing. I will continue my journey as an independent artist,” he noted, addressing concerns from fans about a complete retirement.
The singer also revealed that a few previously committed projects are still pending. Due to these earlier agreements, some new songs may be released during the current year. However, he confirmed that once those obligations are fulfilled, he will exclusively focus on independent music.
Arijit Singh’s decision has triggered widespread reaction across social media, with fans expressing shock, sadness, and appreciation for the voice that became a constant presence
in Indian cinema. Rising to iconic status after the success of Tum Hi Ho, Arijit went on to deliver numerous chart-topping songs across blockbuster films, shaping the soundscape of modern Bollywood.
Arijit Singh, currently aged 38, made the announcement through his social media account, days after the release of Maatrubhumi from Battle of Galwan.
