Summary A bipartisan group of senators is introducing a resolution calling on Iran to hold free elections.
The measure comes nearly three years after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejads re-election was challenged by protestors who were met with a brutal crackdown.Republican Sen. John Hoeven, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal and other sponsors said the measure would show the Iranian people that the U.S. is on their side, even as it cranks up pressure on the Iranian government to abandon its suspected nuclear weapons program. The resolution calls for an end to human rights abuses like detention of the regimes political opponents, the lifting of Internet curbs and the presence of international monitors for Fridays voting.Hoeven said the measure has 56 sponsors so far.
