Protesters rallied outside the United Nations in New York, calling for democracy and condemning the current regime after Syrian security forces killed 20 people.Activists in Homs, which has suffered the highest death toll of any Syrian province since an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March, said security forces killed nine civilians and one defecting soldier.The other fatalities were in Hama, the old Roman city of Busra al-Sham in the southern Hauran Plain and in the northern province of Idlib, they said.We feel them. We support them. They sacrifice themselves to get their freedom and were here to support them because everyone deserves freedom, said Latifeh Almaghrbi, an assistant teacher in New Jersey. We have to live free.Protesters waved the green, white and black flag used by Syria.New Jersey student Motaz Sal said fighting for justice in Syria is all part of the bigger picture.I know how it feels to be in a country like that because Im originally Palestinian and we know how it feels to be in such violence and killing, Sal said. So helping my brothers and sisters from Syria is a way to represent our countries in general and whats going on.New York resident Kyle Dalco held a sign requesting a no fly zone.We would like to raise our voice just to tell them that the Syrian population is suffering under this regime, horrific crime against humanity being committed every day and we would like them to enforce a no fly zone to stop these killers from going on with whatever theyre doing over there, said Dalco.The Human Rights Watch called on the Arab League to suspend Syria, request the United Nations impose sanctions on those responsible for the violence and refer Syria to the International Criminal Court.Syria blames armed groups for the violence and says 1,100 members of the security forces have been killed. Protesters in New York showed their solidarity by marching from the United Nations Plaza to the Syrian Mission.
