Summary Arab League calls on Arab states to suspend the memberships of Syria and Yemen from the bloc.

A committee of parliamentarians in the Arab League called on member states to suspend the memberships of Syria and Yemen in the bloc if they continued to ignore the demands of their pro-democracy protesters. The head of the committee said that mass slaughter’ was taking place in Yemen and Syria and called on the Arab League to deal with them in the same fashion as Libya was dealt with. After a crackdown by Muammar Gaddafis government on pro-democracy protesters, the Arab League had suspended Libyas membership. The parliamentary committee was careful to specify that it was not calling for foreign intervention, such as the NATO imposed no-fly zone on Libya that was initially supported by the Arab League. The latest figures released by the United Nations human rights office indicated Syrian security forces have killed 2,700 protesters since the start of a pro-democracy uprising in March, including at least 100 children. The Syrian government says protests are led by armed gangs. In Yemen ongoing battles between heavily armed loyalists and foes of Yemen’s president Ali Abdullah Saleh killed at least 68 people since Sunday (September 18) when frustration boiled over at Salehs refusal to accept a power transfer plan mediated by Gulf states. The recommendations of the committee of parliamentarians are not binding, but the forceful steps recommended by the body would represent a significant strengthening of the Arab Leagues approach to Syria and Yemen if adopted.
