Indias ruling Congress party launched a scathing attack on Monday on Chief Minister Narendra Modi of western Gujarat state for his failure to check the religious riots of 2002 in his province.Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari, who was addressing media persons in New Delhi, charged Modi of being involved in the carnage.It must be recalled that about 2,500 people, mostly Muslims, are estimated to have been beaten, stabbed or burned to death in the state in 2002, after a group of Muslims set fire to a train carrying Hindu pilgrims, killing 59.Tiwari attacked Modi, a leader of federal opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for not quitting his post despite allegations that he was involved. Activists have blamed Modi for one of Indias worst religious riots as he failed to stop the killing of hundreds of Muslims.Last Friday, top cop Sanjiv Bhatt filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court implicating Modi in the 2002 religious riots. Tiwari also commented on the arrest of his partys lawmaker Suresh Kalmadi, who was also chief organiser of the 19th Commonwealth Games of Delhi in 2010.But defending his partys stand, Tiwari maintained that Congress has always acted against the slightest of hint of corruption.
