On the death anniversary of renowned freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, Harbans Singh, a 100-year-old freedom fighter in northern Punjab state, said that unlike his more famous contemporary, he did not receive any felicitation, recognition or even aid from the government.Singh, who fought for Indias independence with iconic leaders like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, said on Wednesday that the government of India neglected his efforts. I did not receive anything from government. They did not give any credit or recognition to me. Two or three years ago, the media highlighted my plight and also printed my story with my photographs. Then some politician, Manmohan Lal, promised to give me 100,000 rupees ($2,226.23) but till date I have not received that money, he said.Singh slammed the federal government for being blind towards poverty-stricken freedom fighters who once fought for the countrys independence. Singh recalled the days spent with Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, and said he used to hide them from British police and give them money. Singh was also sent to jail in 1928 for helping Bhagat Singh and his friends. He said he hoped the government pays attention to freedom fighters like him, and helps them.
