Athens: Sudden snow storms cause road chaos

Summary Snowstorms on Monday caused the closure of the Athens national highway and roads in northern Athens suburbs, with traffic jams stretching for up to 15 kilometers near the Athens suburb of Malakasa, 30 kilometers north of the city centre.

The sudden wintry weather came when many motorists were returning from a three-day weekend due to a public holiday of Ash Monday. Vehicles unprepared for the unexpected snowfall were left stranded on the sides of roads or struggled to drive without snow chains. In northern Greece the Egnatia national highway and other roads were closed and traffic movement was only possible with snow chains as regions were blanketed by heavy snow. Temperatures were expected to fall to minus five degrees C.Snows reached as far south as the Peloponnese peninsula with movement was only possible with snow chains in elevated regions and snowfall in the town of Tripoli. Meteorologists said the cold weather snap swept into Greece from the north and was expected to last for the next three days.
