Summary Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi underwent bone transplant surgery on Monday to repair damage to his jaw and teeth sustained when he was assaulted in 2009 by a man who threw a souvenir at him.
Berlusconi had complained earlier this month at a news conference that his work as prime minister meant he had no time to look after his health. He said that this was a big sacrifice and if he was a private citizen he would not have to put up with this. According to a statement the four-hour operation carried out in Milan was necessary to allow the premier to chew properly and move his jaw.Berlusconi received a broken nose, fractured teeth and gashed lips after being hit in the face by a spiked souvenir, a small model of the cathedral of Milan in December, 2009.
