Summary China has increased security after online calls for Middle East-inspired Jasmine Revolution gatherings across the country.
Police arrested a handful of protesters in Shanghai on two consecutive weekends, and some foreign reporters were harassed or beaten up by police and plain-clothed security people last Sunday in Beijings Wangfujing shopping street. In Beijing, police smothered the designated area and no protest happened. Meanwhile, plain clothed men shoved, punched and kicked reporters and tried to confiscate their equipment.Police are now telling foreign reporters they might lose their government-issued journalist cards and residence visas if they continued to report from certain bustling parts of central Beijing without getting permission three working days in advance. Some journalists were told the requirement to obtain permission prior to reporting in open spaces applies to all of China.
