(Web Desk) – An Indian woman activist was allegedly beaten and paraded naked in Delhi for her activism against illegal liquor trade.
According to Hindustan Times, the incident allegedly happened after the police and activists of ‘Nasha Mukhti Panchayat’ seized illegal liquor from northwest part of Delhi.
Swati Jai Hind, Chief of Delhi’s Commission of Women stated that after the confiscation of liquor the residents surrounded the female volunteer and attacked her. She was beaten and paraded naked.
Hind stated that, “the owner of the illegal liquor shop, along with a mob, surrounded the female volunteer. She was beaten up with iron rods, her clothes were torn and she was paraded naked in the locality”.
Deputy Commissioner Police (Rohini), Rajneesh Gupta, however, dismissed the DCW’s allegations that the woman was “paraded naked” and instead said her clothes had “torn a little” while she was being beaten by a group of women. “There were no men among the assailants,” said the DCP.
According to BBC, the victim’s video that went viral stated that she was dragged and disrobed for opposing people who were running illegal liquor dens.
“When I was being dragged naked, a policeman arrived at the scene and tried to save me. He asked the crowd to leave me, but they beat him also. They said they will do the same with the DCW chief and others who had come yesterday (Wednesday),” she said.
Delhi police’s statement on social media sparked criticism when the police described the incident as a “quarrel by some ladies”.
Incident referred to is reaction and quarrel by some ladies of same JJ cluster as victim. Injuries simple as per MLC. Case already registered against accused ladies. Incorrect that Police Post is 50 Mtrs away. Nearest Police Post about 5Kms away.

Hind, tweeted that it was “shameful” that the police was labeling the incident as a mere quarrel.

Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Dehli also condemned the gruesome act as “utterly shocked and shameful” and that such an incident had occurred in the country’s capital.
The initiative by Delhi police ‘Nasha Mukhti Panchayat’ started to end illegal alcohol dens, where illegal alcohol is brewed and is the cause of alcohol poisoning leading to deaths.
