The Maldivian parliament on Wednesday approved a 14-member cabinet appointed by President Mohamed Waheed, who is accused of seizing power in a military- and police-backed coup.A vote in the 77-member assembly ratified Waheeds cabinet, which he named after taking office following the resignation of his predecessor Mohamed Nasheed, who later claimed he was forced to step down by a police mutiny.Forty-five members voted in favour of the cabinet, a parliamentary official contacted by telephone said, adding the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of former president Nasheed boycotted the vote.Earlier this month, Waheed passed his first popularity test by endorsing members of his coalition partner parties for two by-elections, which they won comfortably.Waheed has denied allegations that he was involved in any coup and has ordered a government investigation into Nasheeds controversial exit from office, but rejected international calls for early presidential elections.Nasheed became the first democratically elected leader in the Maldives following the nations inaugural multi-party elections in October 2008. However the 2009 legislative elections led to a hung parliament.
