Police vehicle runs over citizens during Peru mine protest

A police vehicle ran over a woman and her two children in Cajamarca, enraging local citizens already battling with authorities as they protest the massive Conga mine project.Video from a security camera showed the police vehicle swerving up onto a sidewalk and running over a woman and her two daughters. The woman, who local news outlets identified as 31-year-old Juana Beatriz Ponce Garcia, was rushed to the hospital.Local resident Sergio Quispe said was among those on the scene when the police vehicle careened onto the sidewalk.The truck came at full speed and turned this way and ran over them. It ran over two people and a girl. One was here ahead and the other here in the middle and the woman was behind with her leg destroyed.Angry protesters surrounded the police vehicle. After hours of protests and scuffles with police, protesters eventually flipped over and burned the vehicle.U.S.-based miner Newmont has met with fierce resistance to the 4.8 million dollar Conga mine they hope to put in the Cajamarca region.Local Elayo Huaman said demonstrators are appealing to Peruvian President Ollanta Humala to stop the mine project.We arent going to let the Conga project move forward. We are calling on the government to reflect. If they say yes to the Conga project we will hold them responsible for what happens in the future, Huaman said.
