Summary West Indies defeated Ireland by 44 runs in a crucial Group B match at Mohali.
Ireland won the toss and put West Indies in to bat in their Group B match at the World Cup on Friday. Opener Devon Smith hit a maiden one-day century and Kieron Pollard smacked 94 off just 55 balls as West Indies posted 275 all out against Ireland.Smith hit a 133-ball 107 and Pollard belted eight fours and five sixes to frustrate the Irish who won the toss and put the Caribbean side in to bat on an easy-paced track at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.Smith also shared 89 runs with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, opening the innings after Chris Gayle was ruled out on the morning of the match with an abdominal strain.Kevin OBrien, who struck World Cups fastest hundred against England, showed he had the skills with the ball as well, grabbing a career-best 4-71.Chasing 276 runs target, Ireland started well but lost openers earlier. Joyce played a responsible innings of 84 runs with Wilson who made 61 runs.But tail could not survive against the quality West Indies bowlers. Ireland were bowled out at 231 runs in 49 overs. After this win, West Indies have qualified for the quarterfinals.
