Summary An Indian court on Monday confirmed that athlete Pinki Pramanik was a male.
Pinki Pramanik won several important medals for India in women s events.
Pinki had been accused earlier this year by her girlfriend, Anamika Acharya, of being a man and of raping her.
A board of seven doctors had been set up in June after those charges were levelled to determine Pinki s gender. Their report says that Pinki is male and capable of intercourse.
Indian police arrested the decorated athlete Pinki Pramanik, citing a medical report and proceeding to charge the former athlete with raping a 32-year old woman.
Pramanik is a decorated athlete having won golds in 4X400 m relay at 2006 Doha Asiad, 2005 Asian Indoor Games at Pattaya and gold at 400 m 2006 South Asian Games in Colombo.
In Colombo, Pinki also won gold in 800m and 4X400m relay. In 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne the athlete won silver in 4X400 m relay. In all those events Pramanik represented the country as a woman.
“The medical board that examined Pinki Pramanik declared Pramanik as male having the ability to rape. Accordingly the police have also filed the chargesheet,” Shantomoy Basu, the additional public prosecutor of Barasat Judge Court told HT on Monday.
On June 14, a 32-year-old woman lodged a complaint with the cops of Baguiati police station that in the name of marriage, Pramanik had raped her and took her properties. The cops arrested Pramanik on that very night and produced before the court next day. Pramanik was remanded to police custody.
