Karachi- Equipped with statistics, Director General Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt. General Asim Saleem Bajwa told the media on Friday that a major terrorist nexus, which is responsible for attacking high-value targets, has been busted by the security agencies. The activities of the network were controlled by it’s headquarter based in Miranshah, FATA.
Speaking of the terrorist nexus, he explained with the help of multimedia that there are basically three major terrorist networks working in Karchi namely Al –Qaeda (subcontinent group), Lashkar-e-Jhangwi (LeJ), and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The groups collaborate with each other to carry out terrorist attacks. 97 terrorists of the three groups have been arrested so far in major crackdowns across the country, 26 out of them were proclaimed offenders, highly wanted by the agencies and had huge head money on them. Among the arrested are explosive experts, suicide bombers and financiers of the groups.
The network was involved in carrying out attacks in ISI Headquarters Lahore, ISI headquarters Multan, FIA building in Lahore and Karachi Airport and many other sensitive targets. Al-Qaeda (subcontinent group) leader “Musanah” is the mastermind behind those activities. Musannah and another leader of Al-Qaeda (subcontinent group) Naeem Bukhari have been killed during the security forces operation.
DG ISPR informed media that a plan of Hyderabad jail break was stymied by security forces which was 90 percent ready for execution, the terrorists wanted to release the accused of Daniel Pearl case Khalid Omar Shiekh and the convict of Attack on Karachi Corps Commander Shehzad Ahmed, the plan also included a list of 35 people who were to be killed in the siege. And the items recovered during raids such as location maps, ball-bearings and detonating cord and the weapons stolen from police indicated insider’s help, which later turned out to be a police constable who was arrested.
He also spilled the details of the attack on Kamra Airbase, which he said was planned in Miranshah and was executed with the help of local facilitators.
Shedding light on the successes of Zarb-e-Azb, he added that it has achieved remarkable feats and has destroyed the hide-outs of terrorists in FATA which has resulted in a visible decline in the terrorist attacks in the whole country.
Talking about the situation in Karachi, he said there has been an 85 percent decrease in the incidents of extortion. Target killing has dropped by 70 percent and the number of cases of kidnapping for ransoms has declined by 90 percent. Rangers have carried out 7000 operations in Karachi; more than 12000 people have been arrested and 425000 bullets have been recovered.
He added that Army Chief has himself been keenly involved in the activities and has been overseeing the progress regularly.
At the end he stressed that this fight cannot be fought alone, the citizens have to be sensitive to their surroundings and be cautious that do not unintentionally facilitate terrorists. He added, to end the terrorism we have to find out the abettors, facilitators and financiers of the terrorists that stay within us, he said terrorists stay at people’s home as travelers and innocent people unintentionally host terrorists as their guests. He stressed that the public has to play an active role to root out the menace of terrorism from the motherland.
