National Assembly approves Telecom Reorganisation Amendment Bill

Summary National Assembly approved telecom reorganisation amendments covering appellate tribunal rules, 5G infrastructure disputes, and penalties for regulatory issues.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The National Assembly has approved the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Amendment Bill 2025 with a majority vote.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja presented the bill in the lower house. An amendment moved by government lawmaker Huma Akhtar Chughtai was also approved, although she could not explain the details of her proposed amendment in the session.

The federal IT minister later clarified that the amendment relates to changing the retirement age limit for judges of the appellate tribunal.

Amendments proposed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Syed Naveed Qamar were also approved. Qamar had presented three amendments to the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Amendment Bill 2025.

While explaining his proposals, Qamar said disputes could emerge regarding rights of way for laying 5G fibre cables, and authority for resolving such disputes should be given to provincial and relevant government institutions.

The approved amendments also propose setting limits on fines imposed during dispute resolution proceedings.
