Federal ministers Babar Awan, Firdous Ashiq Awan and Khursheed Shah addressed a news conference in Islamabad after attending a meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadar.Babar Awan complained that today during the hearing of the memogate scandal, the federation was not given a chance to explain its position. He said neither was Hussain Haqqani, the former ambassador to the US, was given a chance to speak. During the hearing, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif told the court that he had come to the court to record statement against President Zardari.Addressing, Babar Awan, the former federal law minister, said that Nawaz Sharif should not launch attacks on democracy while hiding behind a federal institution, an allusion to the Supreme Court.He said that Nawaz was in exile at the time of dictatorship while the PPP has a legacy of sacrifices for the cause of democracy. He said Nawaz had gone to the court to get an elected President declared a traitor. He questioned why Nawaz didn’t file a case against the former dictator who toppled his government and sent him to exile.Awan said that the elected government of the PPP is not willing to forego the executive’s constitutional supremacy at any cost. He said that he himself was present in the court but was not given a chance to speak.The SC has asked the government, including the President and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, to file their replies regarding the memogate scandal.
