Non-military aid to Pakistan depends on US internal situation: Munter

Summary Provision of non-military assistance to Pakistan under Kerry Lugar Bill has become doubtful.

The US ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter admitted that the US would like to keep the promise of assistance but its future has been linked with internal politics of his country.While talking to Dunya News, he admitted that the release of funds under the bill has been slow. Replying a question, he said that due to internal situation in the U.S. and falling economy of Europe, the issue of Kerry Lugar has become more complicated. The U.S. wants Pakistan to fulfill the promise made with Pakistan but its future has conditioned with internal politics of the US. He said, “We are trying to meet our commitments but we can do it or not, it depends on Americas internal affairs”. He offered assistance regarding the memo issue, stating that yet there are many points which need more explanation. We are still depending on inquiry conducted by Pakistan, he said. Before this, while speaking at a private university in Lahore, he said that Iran is not trust worthy, Pakistan should deal with Turkmenistan for gas.
