Summary PIA, afflicted by losses, has procured two planes on lease after grounding two 747 Boeings.
The revelation is a new scam in the crises-marred national flag carrier, which has now leased 25-year old Greek planes for a whopping rent of $7.5 million for 1,000 hours after grounding its two jumbos.Sources said the PIA got these planes from Hellenic Imperial Airways along with crew. The two PIA jumbos have been grounded on account of engine faults. However, their engines got out of order for possible skimping on routing check-ups and overhauls. The irony is that the rent paid by PIA to the Greek company is more than the worth of the chartered 25-year-old planes. Sources said that the Civil Aviation has denied one of the chartered planes the permission to fly.A PIA spokesman said that six PIA flights have been grounded – three for routine overhauling while three others for technical faults.
