French court imposes $20m penalty on Pakistani Religious Ministry

Summary French court ordered Pakistani Religious Ministry to pay damages worth $ 20 million to Saudi Arabia.

This penalty has been imposed due to violation of an agreement with Saudi Real Estate Group in 1995.According to this agreement between Pakistani government and Saudi Arabia, Dallah Real Estate Group was bound to construct three towers and lease them to Pakistani Religious Ministry for 90 years for residences of pilgrims.The cabinet of then caretaker PM Miraj Khalid cancelled this agreement. At this, Saudi group filed this case in the French court, seeking damages over violation of the accord.The Ministry for Religious Affairs is consulting legal experts to challenge this verdict in the French Supreme Court.
